What the Flip's a Favicon

Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7) and Firefox are changing the way we view websites. Tabbed browsing is the hot new function in web site viewing, and it's altering the way we surf from site to site.

In the past if we wanted to keep a website open while we viewed another, we would have to 'right click' and open in a new window. This meant we had lots of different windows open at any one time, and finding our way from one window to another meant clicking away in our taskbar, sometimes confused as to the exact location of any particular site.

With tabs this is made so much easier.

The diagram above shows just what tabbed browsing looks like. It's important to note just how prolific favicons are in this new layout. As you can see a favicon is an icon, or to be more precise a 'favorites icon'. The icons shown here in internet explorer 6.0 ( the most commonly used browser ) were only displayed once a site was added to your favorites. However, with the release of IE7 and the growing use of Firefox, this is no longer the case. Favicons are displayed in the address bar and in every tab.

If you want to give your website that professional look, and rank alongside Google, the AA, and the BBC -  to name but a few - then your site needs a Favicon. It also adds to the functionality of your site, by making it far easier for other people to recognize your pages in tabs.
