RSS or Really Simple Syndication is one of those emerging technologies which is going to emerge even quicker due to its integration into Internet Explorer 7.0.
Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7) is Microsoft's first major upgrade to their browser since around 2001. It's believed this upgrade is largely due to the ever increasing popularity of the 'Open Source' Firefox platform. IE7 has made improvements in many areas RSS being just one of these.
So what is RSS and why should we care? Anyone who uses RSS already will tell you that it is a really cool leap forward when it comes to keeping up with all the news and articles scattered around the Internet. Unlike email newsletters, you don't have to give out your email address and fill your mail box with things your don't care about. What RSS allows you to do is add a sites RSS feed to your RSS reader and every time your launch IE7 it check with these sites for updates. If there are any new news stories their headlines are added to your reader.
This basically means you can take a look at all your rss headlines from all the sites you like to keep up-to-date with without having to trawl around the Internet or get a mail box full of junk. Unsubscribing is easy and the site owners never get your details.
If you provide independent information on-line you may also get your RSS feed onto Google News which as one of our clients found out proves to really help the popularity of your site. www.Nafems.org the Natioal Association for Finite Element Simulation had their site redeveloped last year. As part of this redevelopment we added an RSS tool to our Duo CMS system. This has allowed them to submit all their news to Google helping to increase their visits from 300 unique visits per day up to as many as 2,000 unique visits in a day.
The visitor count is up due to many reasons but we're sure RSS is keeping the site busy, more accessible and helping it to stay a hub of the international engineering community.
If you provide content that you think should be part of the RSS revolution, if you want to provide feeds to your clients and to Google why not contact us for a quick meeting so we can demo our RSS system as part of our Duo Easy Edit Website system . Duo web software is some of the easiest to use on the net so don't be intimidated and come along and have a no obligation demo.
